There is a quote from a BoJack Horseman, “... you realize that everyone loves you but no body likes you, and that is the loneliness feeling in the world”. The greatest of this quote is that it says a lot about cultural perception. What I mean by my use of the term cultural perception is this idea of forming face value ideas of a person personality and character and importance through the filter of social roles and cues. Woah that was a lot; so what does it mean? Well in Bojack’s case he says this quote as he is enjoying the fame and credit of “his” performance in the Secritariate film. Now considered a ‘bonafied movies star” people react by giving him status and privileges where prior he was unrecognized or ignored. The genius aspect of the show is that Bojack is not in the film at all the performance being given by a computer generated image based off of Bojack. So just by having his face in it he given this status of movie star by the public, who applaud his work, no of which he did. My point here is that his status is separate from his talent or any real work of his. When Princess Caroline calls Bojack a “bonafided movie star” it is after the box office numbers come it. It is not because of artistry or the innovation in film, or the performance by Bojack. It is based on the number of tickets sold, the people essentially voting it a good movie by going to see it. Regarding the idea of cultural perception the take away is that the status of movie star is a perception of status that some people have based on the opinion and support of the general public. How the public perceives these individuals is then influenced by the roles these individuals play professionally and in their private lives. Going back to Bojack when he says, “ everyone loves you but nobody likes you”, he is referring to the popularity of movie star Bojack who is not really Bojack. The show makes this idea literal since the on screen Bojack is a CGI stand in. The Bojack people loves is in reality just an image of him, an image that meet their expectations of what a movie star should be. Extending this beyond the show Bojacks quote can apply to anyone. The truth is is that the people around make assumptions about us based off of salient details and from that draw expectations about us. The expectations that are made depend on attributes of a person, the social environment and that persons place in it. Now this is not a totally sad thing or meant to be taken as a negative way people try to judge and discriminate. Another truth is that there are roles we must have in relation to other people. No it become sad or a shame when a person is treated as just their role. When they are loved for being a movie star but not for who they are.
