College Rivalry

I had a rival in college

Each one a show off of knowledge.

We both students of philosophy

The kid’s name lost to me

It would seem

I was reliving time now five years past

How I thought it would last yet ended so fast.

We all thought we were clever

Youths who traded quips, tongue whips

I thought wisdom poured from my lips.

I had friend who was in a band

I recall a garage performance

Back yard party gig, a simple rig.

My friend played lead guitar

I listened intently to notes

While the lyrics melodically flowed by

Missed because I just couldn’t hear.

But I remember the singers face

He was sleeping with a woman

I liked who never wanted me

The crowd jostled and I dropped my beer

I apologized by searching for a broom

As I melted from the room.
